GSI Disability Insurance for Residents and Fellows
GSI can offer eligible residents and fellows a path to individual disability insurance without medical underwriting, including options with no medical exam or lab work. It can be worth exploring when health history makes traditional underwriting difficult. Your institution, state, application history and the specific offer determine eligibility; a prior decline does not guarantee acceptance.

What a current carrier example tells us
Guardian describes a resident and fellow GSI offer without medical questions or exams for the base amount, for eligible applicants. Its disclosures state that the written contract governs benefits and that product provisions and availability can vary by state. This example does not establish Drs Choices’ access to that offer or your eligibility.
Build an eligibility checklist
Ask for the insurer, exact program name, eligible training roles, institution, application window, state availability, and any conditions involving prior applications or coverage. Have the program’s authorized contact confirm those answers in writing before submitting an application.
Separate access from coverage quality
After checking eligibility, compare the disability definition, exclusions, benefits, riders, and premium terms. Easier entry into a program does not answer how a future claim would be assessed.
Avoid assumptions around deadlines
Do not rely on a general graduation deadline found online. Request the deadline for your current offer and clarify how a move, leave, or training change could affect it. No institution-specific deadline or discount is verified on this page.
No medical exam or lab work: what to confirm
Ameritas describes its resident GSI process as requiring no medical exams or lab work, with limited health and lifestyle questions. Guardian describes no medical questions or exams for its eligible base GSI offer. These are distinct programs. Confirm that no blood or urine sample is required for the exact offer and amount you are considering; no-exam does not always mean no questions.
Health conditions, prior denials and policy limitations
A health condition and a previous insurance decline are different eligibility questions. For example, NFP’s published DMC offer excludes certain applicants declined or postponed within its stated period and separately describes a pre-existing-condition limitation. Those are that program’s terms, not a nationwide rule. Ask about your exact application history before another formal application; never assume that guaranteed issue means every condition or future claim is covered.

Ask Drs Choices to check your options
Start with your state, residency or fellowship institution, current career stage and expected graduation date. Ask which GSI offer Drs Choices can arrange for you, what eligibility rules apply, and whether a student policy discount continues after graduation. Program access must be confirmed for your specific circumstances. You can use the email link below for an initial inquiry; send medical records only through an appropriate secure application process if requested.
A student policy discount is separate from underwriting
Ask which premium discount, if any, is part of the individual policy and how its eligibility is established. GSI describes an application or underwriting arrangement, not a uniform student discount. Carrier resident/GSI examples have their own terms. Check discount continuation, future increase pricing, and state availability separately before relying on an offer.

Common questions
Does this page confirm that Drs Choices can arrange GSI at my institution?
No. Program access, intermediary authorization, and applicant eligibility require separate confirmation.
Does starting younger lock every future increase to that age?
Not necessarily. Existing coverage can retain its contractual premium protection, while additional benefits may use later attained-age pricing. A continuing student or resident policy discount is a separate question.
