What the terminology can mean
Guardian’s explanation distinguishes true own-occupation, modified own-occupation, and other definitions. Under some definitions, qualifying for total disability benefits can be compatible with working in another occupation; other versions require that you not work elsewhere. This is an example of why policy wording must be compared, not a statement that every carrier uses the same terms.
Turn your work into questions
Imagine a clinician who can no longer perform a particular duty but can still teach. Ask: How would the contract identify the occupation? Which duties are material? Would teaching affect eligibility or the benefit? This is a question to investigate, not a prediction that the hypothetical claim would be paid.
Compare beyond the headline
Check how long the definition applies and whether it changes during a claim. Separately review partial-disability provisions, exclusions, and riders. A favorable total-disability definition does not answer every question about a reduced-hours return to work.

Does own-occupation mean every inability to perform a procedure is covered?
No. The occupation, duties, medical facts, policy definition, exclusions, and claim requirements all need to be evaluated under the actual contract.
