Non-Cancellable vs. Guaranteed Renewable Disability Insurance

Non-cancellable and guaranteed renewable provisions can protect an existing policy’s premium and terms during the contract’s stated period when its conditions are met. Guaranteed renewable alone does not necessarily freeze premiums. A future increase can add a separately priced benefit.

Read the guarantee period

Find the applicable age or termination date, premium-payment requirements and any later renewal conditions. Do not extend a guarantee beyond the period written in the policy. Confirm whether the protection is part of the base contract or an optional rider.

A level schedule is not the whole answer

A level premium schedule describes scheduled payments. A non-cancellable provision concerns what the insurer may change. Ask how both work together on the actual proposal. A lower initial payment under a changing schedule is different from a level commitment.

New benefits can bring a new premium

Protecting the premium on coverage already purchased does not make future benefits free or guarantee that they use the same younger age. Review the increase rider’s rating and discount provisions before interpreting a locked-rate statement.

Keep a comparison record

For each proposal, write down the benefit amount, premium schedule, guarantee duration, renewal conditions and source clause. Ask the advisor to explain an increase, a missed payment and renewal after the guarantee period as separate examples. Avoid choosing solely from a policy label.

Common questions

Does a future increase use my original younger age?

Not necessarily. The original coverage can have premium protection while additional coverage is priced using a later attained age. Confirm the pricing rule and any continuing discount in your policy.
