Residual and Partial Disability Benefits for Physicians

Residual or partial disability provisions may pay a benefit when a qualifying disability reduces income, duties or work capacity under the contract’s definition. The required loss, calculation and duration vary. Working fewer hours by choice is not the same as satisfying a disability claim definition.

Why the provision matters

A physician may return to some consultations while still being unable to perform a full clinical schedule. A total-disability definition may not answer how that period is covered. Review whether the proposed policy includes a partial or residual provision and whether it is built in or purchased as a rider.

Read the trigger before the calculation

Ask whether the provision requires an income loss, loss of duties, reduced time, or a combination. Check how the insurer establishes prior earnings and the measurement period. A policy may define these terms differently from your own bookkeeping. A sample claim calculation should identify the actual formula and any minimum benefit.

Keep relevant work and income records

For a hypothetical physician returning gradually after an injury, the useful record is the change in duties and earnings over time, along with the required medical evidence. It is not simply a note that hours were reduced. Ask the insurer what documentation its claims process requires; do not send medical records through a general website inquiry.

Examine the recovery period

Ask whether recovery benefits continue when medical restrictions improve but qualifying income loss remains. Confirm limits, required evidence and how other earnings are treated. Review this alongside the elimination and benefit periods so each part of the contract answers a distinct timing question.
