Disability Insurance Riders: What Physicians Should Compare
A rider changes or adds to a policy’s coverage under its own conditions. Compare what triggers the benefit, its limits, extra cost and availability. A useful rider addresses a specific need; an appealing name alone does not establish how it will work.

Future increase options
An eligible increase rider can preserve an opportunity to apply for additional benefits without new medical underwriting. Income evidence, existing coverage, option dates and maximums may still apply. Ask whether additional benefits are priced at attained age and whether the student policy discount continues. Keeping medical eligibility and locking every future premium are different features.

Residual or partial disability benefits
These provisions address qualifying losses when a disability reduces work or earnings without meeting every requirement for total disability. Read any income-loss threshold, work-duty requirements, measurement period and recovery provision. A reduced schedule alone does not establish a payable claim.

Cost-of-living adjustments
A COLA provision may increase benefits during an eligible disability claim. Check when increases begin, how they are calculated, caps and whether the adjustment continues after recovery. Do not assume COLA automatically raises your coverage every year while you are healthy; that is a separate question from future purchase rights.

Student-loan and catastrophic benefits
Some optional riders add a benefit for qualifying student-loan obligations or a more severe disability meeting stated criteria. Ameritas describes examples for medical residents, but amounts and availability are program-specific. Ask which loans, duration and disability requirements apply and whether the additional premium fits your priorities. An insurance rider is separate from a loan-discharge program.
