Life Insurance Planning for Physician Households
A physician household’s life-insurance review starts with who depends on each person, what support would be missing after a death, and how long that need would last. Career title or salary alone does not determine a suitable policy or coverage amount.

Map the household, not just the paycheck
Make a short inventory of earned income, childcare, household care and other support each person provides. For a household with two physicians, prepare a separate column for each person. Similar earnings do not make their responsibilities interchangeable. Mark which costs would continue, which might change, and which need a better estimate. Keep this as a discussion worksheet rather than treating its total as a recommendation.

Give each responsibility a time horizon
Put temporary obligations and potentially longer-lasting responsibilities on separate lines. Term insurance addresses a specified period; permanent coverage is intended for longer protection while its conditions are maintained. Compare both against the same household purpose. A cash-value illustration does not answer whether the premium is sustainable or the death benefit fits the need. Ask for guarantees and projections to be explained separately.

Build one record of existing protection
List individual policies and employer benefits with their stated amounts, premium responsibility, duration and supporting documents. Ask the employer what happens when employment changes. Record uncertain information as pending instead of adding it to confirmed coverage. Note any conversion deadline on an existing term policy and ask the insurer which choices remain available; the right and its conditions come from the contract.

Leave the review with clear next actions
Choose one unresolved question for each policy: duration, cost, beneficiary, renewal or a proposed change. Confirm beneficiary instructions through the insurer and obtain legal guidance when the arrangement needs it. Keep the household’s document location current. You can explore the site’s term-life shopping route or request an advisor discussion for more complex questions; opening a route does not issue coverage.

Common questions
Do both physicians in a household need the same policy?
Not necessarily. Responsibilities, existing coverage, duration and affordability should be evaluated for each person. This guide does not select a product or amount.
Does life insurance replace disability income insurance?
Life insurance and disability income insurance address different events. Review death-benefit protection separately from benefits for a qualifying disability under a disability policy.
