Term vs. Whole Life Insurance

Term and whole life serve different coverage goals. Term covers a specified period; whole life is a form of permanent insurance with cash value and policy guarantees subject to its terms. Neither is the right choice for every physician.

Term and whole life: questions to compare
QuestionTerm lifeWhole life
DurationWhat is the coverage term? What is required to keep coverage for life?
CostWhat happens after the initial premium period? Can I sustain the required premiums?
Cash valueGenerally no cash value. What values are guaranteed, and when?
ExitWhen does coverage end? What charges or consequences follow surrender?

When whole life may not fit

Permanent coverage generally costs more initially than comparable term protection. If that cost prevents you from obtaining enough death-benefit protection or strains your budget, examine alternatives. Do not accept cash-value projections as a substitute for deciding whether you need permanent insurance.

Read guarantees and non-guarantees separately

Request the guaranteed values, any non-guaranteed illustration, surrender terms, and loan provisions. Loans and withdrawals can affect policy values and benefits. Ask the advisor to explain an unfavorable scenario as well as the illustrated one.

Make the decision in context

Write down why the insurance is needed, for how long, and what tradeoffs you are accepting. Discuss tax or estate-planning assumptions with your own qualified professional. No personalized tax conclusion or investment-return promise is made here.
