Disability Insurance for Cardiologists
A cardiologist’s disability review should begin with the work performed, then examine the definition, benefit amount and relevant riders. Describe any procedural and nonprocedural mix. Subspecialty training alone does not establish a policy’s occupation definition or guarantee the treatment of a future claim.

Describe the whole practice
Which parts of your week involve consultations, inpatient care, imaging, interventions, electrophysiology, call or teaching? Include only duties you actually perform, with their approximate share of your work. Ask how the insurer would describe your occupation and which policy language addresses that description. Avoid substituting a fellowship title for the details.

Compare complete and partial interruptions
Ask for two explanations: one involving inability to perform the relevant occupational duties and another involving a medically limited schedule with continuing earnings. Review the residual rider’s conditions and documentation. Where a brochure uses a particular income-loss threshold or benefit formula, verify that it appears in your own proposed contract.

Check the fellowship-to-practice transition
Find the next date for exercising any existing increase option. Ask what income evidence, other-coverage information and purchase requirements apply. Review the additional premium separately from the price of existing benefits. The Standard’s specimen illustrates attained-age pricing for added coverage; your issued rider and state form must establish your actual rule.

Set priorities before comparing prices
Bring household commitments, reserves, current benefits and a sustainable premium budget. Identify questions about the waiting period, benefit duration, exclusions and renewal terms before choosing a proposal. Ask which unresolved points need documents or insurer clarification. A useful review ends with a written comparison and clear next actions, rather than a specialty-based ranking.

Common questions
Does fellowship completion automatically increase my coverage?
No. Check the policy and any increase rider for the available opportunity, required application, financial eligibility, limits and cost. A new salary does not itself establish additional benefits.
Should the review include my nonprocedural work?
Yes. Give an accurate picture of consultations, interpretation, teaching and any other duties alongside procedures. Ask how the complete role relates to the contract’s definition.
