Disability Insurance for OB-GYN Physicians
An OB-GYN disability review should reflect the physician’s actual duties and how each policy defines covered disability. Compare total and residual provisions, exclusions and existing benefits. A restriction affecting one part of practice does not automatically establish what an insurer would pay.

Describe the current balance of duties
Does your role include deliveries, office visits, surgery, hospital coverage, call, teaching or management? How does that mix vary across a typical month? Use your own work description when asking about occupation wording. If you plan to change the mix, ask what information should be provided during the coverage review.

Examine a restriction on one part of practice
Ask about a hypothetical medical restriction that affects deliveries or surgery while some office care remains possible. Which total or residual provisions would need to be considered? What duties, income records and medical evidence would be relevant? Review the complete conditions instead of assuming that continuing any work always permits or prevents payment.

Keep coverage and leave questions clear
List employer leave, short-term benefits, long-term benefits and any individual policy separately. Ask which program governs each situation and request its eligibility rules, exclusions and waiting period. Time away from work alone does not identify a payable benefit. Discuss personal circumstances privately with the appropriate professional.

Plan the financial bridge
Identify household spending, reserves and income that might continue during an interruption. Ask how the proposed elimination period is satisfied and when a qualifying payment could begin. Review duration and benefit limits alongside the premium. Bring that comparison to a discussion before a job change or fellowship transition rather than relying on an anticipated benefit.

Common questions
If I stop performing deliveries, is that automatically a disability claim?
No. The reason for the change, your actual duties, the disability definition and all other conditions must be considered. A voluntary change in practice is not the same as establishing covered disability.
Can I assume employer leave and disability insurance pay the same way?
No. Obtain the rules for each program, including eligibility, payment limits and start dates. Ask how they interact before counting on a particular source of income.
